Spring has sprung and the round of Summer Shows and Game Fairs will be starting .

Our first outing with our big show lorry is the West of England Game Fair at Shepton Mallet March 18/18th. We will be with BASC near the gundog scurries . Available for free advice , and  emergency veterinary help if needed. We will also be stocking wormers and parasite treatments.

Come and say HELLO

Stacey is joining us after a long time of asking !  Alison and Stacey worked together some years ago at a centre specializing in rehabilitation.  Stacey is very experienced in orthopaedic and rehabilitation nursing and is also a qualified behaviourist. Stacy will be able to do home visits for minor procedures such as blood tests and follow up checks . We are hoping to offer several  new services :-concentrating on geriatric pets and how we can help them ;  offering breeding  & midwifery advice and assistance; and behaviour consultations.

HELP FOR HEROES !! Alison , our vet , is NOW BACK from undertaking a trek through Burma  to help provide funds for the Help for Heroes charity. Her father fought in Burma during WW2 and looked after the mules they used for transport. She needs to raise £4,000 for this very worthy cause .

It was an amazing experience . Walking through incredible country  and chatting with veterans suffering from PTSD and learning how Help 4 Heroes has aided them was a truly uplifting and rewarding adventure.

Anyone wishing to help towards this target may donate via
or send a cheque using reference BUR171633062. Many, many thanks .

We are now running very susccessful x-ray days where you can bring along your dog for hip and elbow radiographs to be taken . These digital images will then be sent for scoring under the KC/BVA scheme .

The radiographs are taken in our purpose built unit , with your dog under sedation . You may wait nearby while this is happening and once finished we reverse the sedation and your dog is on his feet again .  Very quick and stress free all round. We can let you see the x-ray pictures straightaway too.

Our next day is  JUNE 16th  at BASC, Dulford , nr Cullompton.

If you would like an appointment please call us.

Other radiographs and minor procedures can also be done on these days by prior arrangement.

As of the 6th April 2016, ALL dogs must be microchipped and registered on a government compliant microchip database. After that date, all puppies must be microchipped by the time that they are eight weeks old.

See this site for more information -

Please give us a call to book an appointment if you require your dog to be microchipped.

Cost is £15 individually or we can offer a discounted rate for a group booking!

Do you worry about how you will cope when your pet gets to the end of their days ?
Now there is so much more that we can do to aid our beloved pets in their twilight years .

We at Mercury Vets have now put an end of life care plan into action . We are members of the international association for palliative and hospice care .Ŵe offer extensive palliative care in the comfort of your own home , when your pet is struggling with his or her life . When the end is getting nearer we can offer hospice care involving frequent visits to your pet , constant communication by phone or Internet , and above all, good quality pain relief. And at the very end we offer a peaceful and dignified put to sleep procedure . A hand holding service all the way and beyond .

We offer three care packages .
A). Palliative care . This will be for a pet that is approaching the end of their days but with maybe a year or two of active life left . dogs with severe arthritis for instance or old cats with some kidney or liver problems . We will visit monthly and ensure your pet is receiving the best in terms of medication , supplements , feed and lifestyle .

B) early hospice care . This will be when your pet is suffering from a terminal illness or condition and the end is probably only a month or two away . We will visit weekly and ensure that pain relief is satisfactory and your pet is comfortable . this is also the time to discuss your hopes for the final days .

C) advanced hospice care . This will be when your pet is only days away from the inevitable . We will visit daily and make sure that your pet is as comfortable and free from pain as is possible . We will help you to decide when the time is right . We will support you and the family at this incredibly emotional time in your lives . We will hold your hand both literally and metaphorically !

The final visit .
We often say this is the final gift that you can give your pet . The chance to drift off to sleep in the comfortable surroundings of his own home with the family members he loves and trusts. We will endeavour to accommodate your every wishes for this most important time . We encourage you to plan in advance for this moment and decide if you would like it to be indoors, outdoors , with music, candles etc or alternatively if you would rather not be present we understand this decision and will treat you pet with the utmost care and expertise .
The euthanasia ( awful word) process can involve a painless sedation injection that allows your pet to gently drift into a deep sleep ; then after ten minutes or so we can administer the final intravenous injection of an overdose of barbiturate anaesthetic . If you would prefer the final injection without the sedation this is also possible and sometimes less stressful as the whole process is quicker . As with all our hospice care procedures we will always accommodate all your wishes wherever possible .

Welcome to our new website!

Puppies in South Dartmoor

We have now purchased a brand new x-ray machine with digital processor . This will be , like the rest of the business , totally mobile . We have another large van in which we can radiograph your pet ; or if it is more convenient we can bring the x-ray machine into your house or kennels. The resulting radiograph will appear within seconds on the computer screen. Most results can be given to you straightaway but we have the facility to email the pictures to an expert for a second opinion if considered necessary
